Power from nature.
Sensing at scale.

StiknTrak is introducing BeFC biofuel cells as the power source for One Way labels. The cells use enzymes, glucose and oxygen to generate electricity for low-power sensing electronics.

How a BeFC cell works

Glucose + oxygen → electricity.

01 · Activate

Moisture starts the cell's enzymatic reaction. Depending on the design, activation can use an environmental liquid or an integrated reservoir.

02 · Generate

Enzymes on the electrodes help convert glucose and oxygen. The reaction creates a small electrical current.

03 · Sense and report

Ultra-low-power electronics use that current to record measurements and transmit data when connectivity is available.

Water helps activate the cell; glucose and oxygen supply the chemical energy. A single BeFC cell has a nominal voltage of about 0.75 V, so device designs may combine cells or manage the voltage electronically.

One Way tracking and temperature history.

With BeFC as the biofuel-cell supplier, StiknTrak pairs the new power source with its sensing, communications firmware and cloud platform. SNS-ONiO is the first label design shown here: it records temperature and supports observed location updates.

The amount of power and operating duration depend on the cell arrangement, activation, reporting schedule and conditions. Each product's specifications should be confirmed for its deployment.

The materials

Paper, carbon and enzymes.

BeFC describes its cells as predominantly paper and carbon, with enzyme-coated electrodes. This offers a route away from the reactive metals used in many miniature batteries for suitable single-use, low-power devices.

A biofuel cell generates electricity from its fuel while the reaction runs. It is an energy source suited to small, short-life electronics; it does not have the same power density as a lithium cell.
